Two horses drawing a lawn mower

Have you ever seen a horse drawn lawn mower?

You might think that this is a thing of the past, but it certainly isn’t. In fact, I recently witnessed a horse drawn lawn mower in action at Torups Castle, one of the best preserved medieval castles in Sweden1.

But why would anyone use a horse drawn lawn mower in 2023?

According to a 2001 study, gas-powered lawnmowers can emit as much PAH2 pollution in one hour as a car driven for 100 miles (150km).

The horse drawn lawn mower is also very quiet and harmonious with the environment and doesn’t disturb the peace and tranquility of nature as their engine counterpart. Especially in the context of a castle garden with many visitors throughout the day, it ensures a serene experience that a gas-powered one could never achieve.

It is also more efficient and eco-friendly than scythes and manual mowers. It provides exercise and training for the horses, as well as fertiliser for the soil.
